@rose anyway, i think it’d be nice to have some alternative to formats that were designed for tape drives where you generally don’t seek and data is mostly appended
because nobody uses archive formats like that anymore
the only interesting one i’ve seen in that direction is dwarfs, which preserves file system metadata and compresses much better than the majority of archivers (often faster too)
