@kaia i have two different APC UPS models. one is a back-ups pro (1500VA to deal with the desktop computer), the other is a rackmount unit for the HTPC (smart-ups 450VA, 1U high)
the former is alright but some load transients (like high-frequency spikes from the GPU) can trigger its fan even on AC power. it works well with apcupsd.
the other one only communicates via serial port, needs a proprietary cable, and won’t work with the ch341 usb-serial knockoffs you can buy. it wants an actual serial port. not nice.
but both have been reliable during power outages and brownouts
