take android (AOSP) as a counterexample: google was clearly taking advantage of free labor and transitioning their shit away from open source, but there weren’t enough people who saw through it and had the backbone to stop supporting that crap. and now that even the distribution of free software on android is threatened, there STILL are people polishing custom roms on the sinking ship instead of contributing to proper alternatives.
