people need to belong, and to that end they look for commonalities. but they are less and less willing to compromise: tech (as the communication medium) has us ever more atomized not because that’s some inherent property of the system or some kind of conspiracy but because it allows us to find ever more specific subgroups to identify with and belong to. all the barriers have disappeared practically overnight.
so what does that do to the social fabric? increasingly we see ourselves surrounded by strangers. people we avoid talking to because they seem a little too different. we feel safer in the company of people who are just like us. this of course is fertile ground for populism.
