@shibao @scathach there’s a primal part in us, an important survival instinct, that constantly looks for things to be afraid of. but in the absence of immediate threats, what we latch onto are abstract fears that we learn from our surroundings. social atomization fuels neuroticism and removes corrective factors in a person’s environment. some people---a lot of people actually—will just spiral out of control.
